Primary Function:

Pour molten metal into dies or sand moulds, perform various duties in shakeout operations, operate fork lift, cut oversize scrap, operate sand reclaim system, take and record metal temperature, repair and reline ladles, etc...

Source of Supervision:

Foundry Supervisor or Lead hand or designate 

Typical Duties:        

• Receives instruction from Supervisor or Lead hand.
• Handles materials, tools and equipment manually and/or by hooking for overhead crane.
• Signals crane operator to hook up pouring ladle and place at furnace for filling.
• Stirs metal with steel skimmer to blend in alloying materials.
• Skims off foreign matter and adds slagging compound to top of metal.
• Signals crane operator to transport ladle to pouring area, and to pour or transfer to electric hoists for pouring on side floors.
• Pours permanent and sand moulds as required.
• Adds exothermic powder and fed metal to feeders as required.
• Observes good Foundry practice in pouring from proper height and at proper speed.
• Keeps ladle spout clean and in repair.
• Repairs or installs new ladle linings.
• Bring in tote boxes and pallets as required for shakeout operations and unloading of the oven.
• Assists in unloading the oven by unhooking the chains.
• Transports castings to storage areas.
• Breaks off feeders from castings or any other shakeout duties required.
• Transports refuse and remelt to appropriate areas.
• Programs, starts, operates and pulls cars in or out of annealing oven, loads or unloads castings on or off the car.
• Installs totes for pep set catalyst at Job Moulding, Pepset and line and core shop.
• Charges and starts induction furnaces as required.
• Operates gas fires scrap preheater.
• Loads definite amounts of various charge material onto weigh feeder with use of crane and magnet as per charge formulae.
• Observes and maintain a proper level of material going through the preheater and into the charge bucket.
• Raises charge bucket with the crane and loads the induction furnaces.
• Repeat the sequence of operations for required number of charges.
• Weighs and adds alloy materials as per formulae.
• Operates, slags off and taps furnaces as required.
• Places gas torches on furnace spouts when necessary.
• Reports and records number of charges and consumption of material.
• Takes temperatures and advises which casting to pour and when to start and stop pouring.
• Records quantities of castings poured, temperature and all other necessary information required by QA and production control.
• Records metal samples for Spectro chemical analysis as directed.
• Records electrical usage from the meters.
• Uses hand and pneumatic tools to chip and remove iron, slag and burnt refractories from ladle spouts and furnace lining. Makes repairs as necessary to maintain safe operation.
• Performs installation of new furnace linings.
• Keeps grinder stones in good working condition by adjusting and changing when needed.
• Coordinates floor activities, check moulds for loose sand or dirt.
• Follows signals from shakeout personnel to handle and transport materials and equipment as required.
• Operates sand reclaim and shakeout. Monitors sand levels.
• Removes wedges and clamps prior to shakeout.
• Handles moulding equipment and rolls over drags in pattern set up area.
• Transports, opens and closes moulds, draws patterns and handles cores as required.
• Lift copes from poured moulds and positions on shaker to release sand.
• Sets up and adjusts cutting torch adapting the appropriate tip for the material to be cut.
• Cuts material to the proper size for shearing or melting operation as required.
• Melts and saves non-ferrous materials out of casting as required.
• Cleans and properly stores burning equipment.
• Performs yard utility duties and yard labour duties such as sandblasting when required.
• Reports any defects in material, tools and equipment to Supervisor.
• Maintains good housekeeping in a designated area and adheres to all applicable O.H.S.A regulations, plant policies, work procedures, etc.
