Primary Function:
To assist pattern makers in pattern working. Convey, catalogue and store pattern equipment. Make green or dry sand moulds, set cores and close moulds for any type of foundry castings. Pours or directs pouring of moulds if required. Produce and finish chemically bonded cores.
Tools & Equipment:
Hammer, screwdriver, hand plane, brushes, protractors, dividers, measuring instruments, saw and powered woodworking tools such as planer, jointer, band saw, wood lathe, milling machine, wheelbarrow, extension cords, metal tape machines, truck ladder, metals stamps, nail bar, wrench, calipers, broom and shovel. Flasks, patterns, power riddles, pneumatic rammer, miscellaneous hand tools such as sledgehammer, trowel, lifter, slick, spoon, gate cutter and moulding equipment. No bake sand mixer, roller conveyors, air vibrator, core boxes and patterns, overhead crane, etc…
Materials:
Glue, nails, screws, dowelling rod, shellac, various hard and soft wood, damaged patterns, core boxes, sharpener/grinder, simple blueprints, wood or metal patterns and core boxes, crates, cartons, nails, index cards, facing and backup sand, parting powder, blacking, chills, arbors, chaplets, gaggers, rods, prepared core and pep set sand, olivine sand, paste, etc…

Typical Duties:
- Receives instructions from Team Leader.
- Receives direction and plan of piece to be cut or made, from Pattern Maker.
- Sets up planer and joiners (blades) and sharpens blades.
- Replace sanding discs and band saw blade.
- Cleans, sands and paint patterns as required.
- Builds crates and stands for pattern storage.
- Sets up operates any type of wood working machine and uses a variety of hand tools to cut and form material to intricate shapes.
- Obtains patterns. Selects flasks and tools and plans moulding procedure in accordance with accepted foundry practice.
- Fits, finishes and assembles component parts of the pattern using hand tools, glue, nails, dowels to conform with blueprint specifications and good foundry practice.
- Strengthens stress points to prevent warpage or distortion.
- Reinforces mould as required by placing gaggers, rod, nails or wire.
- Draw pattern, repairs damaged parts of mould by hand, places chills, cuts, gates, smooths all surfaces and applies blacking or mould wash.
- Places rapping plates and draw irons to reinforce pattern and facilitate the handling and drawing of the pattern from the mould.
- Smooths pattern and reduces it to the exact final dimensions.
- Stencils and marks identification numbers on finished patterns and applies shellac to prevent absorption of moisture.
- Repairs broken or defective patters and alters patterns to confirm to changes in design.
- Sets and anchors cores, closes mould and prepares for casting, drying moulds as required.
- Pours or directs pouring as required.
- Perform runner duties for pattern shop.
- Directs or participates in the tempering of sand, setting up flask equipment and in lifting, turning over and shifts of flasks, moulds or patterns.
- Perform work requiring a thorough knowledge of various moulding techniques, sand conditioning, venting, placing of gates and risers, fitting, setting, anchoring cores and chills, weighting cope to prevent swelling of the casting and the skillful use of hand tools and equipment of the trade.
- Maintains good housekeeping in work area and observes all safety and general rules.
- Checks Foundry production schedules for patterns required for production.
- Receives, uncrates and records all patterns received from customers, notifies production control of receipt of patters and reports any damage or missing pieces.
- Keeps records of all patterns and core boxes in storage areas.
- Operate tape machine to produce alloy tags based on prod. cont. specs.
- Attach tags to pattern.
